Why do beer mats curl, and can it be stopped?
Because only one face ever gets wet. Pulpboard absorbs through its top surface, that face swells, the dry underside does not, and the mat cups into a shallow dish — usually within minutes of the first spill. It cannot be eliminated on an absorbent board, but it is largely controlled by board choice and by running the grain so the sheet resists moving that way. Wet the top of any mat you own and look at it ten minutes later; the corners tell you whether anybody specified the board.
What do grammage and caliper actually tell me?
Grammage is how much board there is by weight, caliper is how thick it is — and you need both, because a heavily compressed board and a bulky one can weigh the same and behave completely differently under a wet glass. We put both numbers on the quote. A supplier who will only offer you ‘standard’ and ‘premium’ is describing a price tier, not a board.
