Everything you need to know about custom cardboard coasters

A custom cardboard coaster is the original piece of bar media: absorbent pulpboard that protects the bar top, sits under every pour, and puts your message exactly where eyes fall between sips. Breweries built brand empires on them for a reason — they’re cheap, useful and impossible to ignore.

Buying comes down to thickness (drink-night vs. keepsake), shape, and print coverage. This guide walks through stocks, sizes, absorbency and bulk pricing — and when you’re ready, request a custom quote with your artwork.

Why go custom

Four square inches that work the whole night

A custom cardboard coaster is read more times than any poster in the room — it sits in the guest’s sightline for the length of every drink, and it costs less than the napkin next to it.

Guaranteed eyeballs

Every drink served is an impression — guests literally stare at your coaster between sips.

Actually useful

High-pulp board drinks condensation rings before they reach the wood — bartenders restock them gladly.

Cheapest print in the bar

At bulk pricing a coaster costs pennies — less than almost any other branded touchpoint per impression.

Thickness and absorbency

Coaster thickness: how heavy should the board be?

Thickness is the quality signal your guests feel. Light board suits one busy night; heavy board survives the evening and goes home in pockets. Here’s how the standard weights compare on absorbency.

Relative absorbency by board thickness

0 2.5 5 7.5 10 0.8 mm Events 1.4 mm Bar pick 2.0 mm Taproom 2.4 mm Keepsake

1.4 mm is the classic bar coaster; step up to 2.0 mm when you want the coaster kept, not tossed.

What venues print on their coasters

Brand art leads, but QR coasters are the fastest-growing order — the coaster becomes the menu.

Pulpboard that earns its place on the bar

Real bar coasters are high-absorbency pulpboard — layers of soft wood pulp pressed into a board that pulls condensation off the glass and holds it. It’s the same stock the classic European brewery coasters use, and it prints with a matte, tactile finish that reads instantly authentic.

The board is uncoated by design — coating kills absorbency — so inks are high-pigment and soak-set for crisp art that doesn’t smear under a sweating pint. Everything is recyclable and compostable when the night’s done.

  • High-pulp absorbent core — drinks the ring before the bar does
  • Classic matte surface — the authentic taproom feel
  • Soak-set inks — art stays crisp under sweating glasses
  • Two-side printing — flip-side promo space free
  • Die-cut shapes — rounds, squares and customs
  • Recyclable & compostable — guilt-free by the case

FAQ

Cardboard coaster questions, answered

Are these real absorbent bar coasters, or coated stock?
Real pulpboard — soft-pressed absorbent core, uncoated surface, the same class of board classic brewery coasters use. Coated ‘coaster-shaped cards’ shed condensation onto the bar; ours drink it.
What's the minimum order?
250 coasters — a busy weekend for one bar. Pricing steps down hard at 1,000, 5,000 and 25,000; venues typically order by the season.
Can you print both sides?
Yes, and you should — two-sided full color is included. The flip side is free ad space: happy-hour promos, QR menus, trivia, or the story behind the beer.
Do QR codes actually scan on pulpboard?
Yes — we print QRs at a size and contrast tested to scan through bar light and minor ring-staining. Menu-QR coasters have replaced table tents in many of our venues.
What shapes are available?
Stock rounds and squares plus custom die-cuts — bottle silhouettes, hop cones, logos, state outlines. Custom shapes carry a one-time die charge and then price like stock.
How thick should a taproom coaster be?
2.0 mm — it survives a full session, feels substantial and is the weight guests pocket as souvenirs. For general bar service 1.4 mm is the classic spec.
Are the coasters eco-friendly?
Yes — pulpboard is made from wood pulp, and finished coasters are recyclable and compostable. No plastic coating, no laminate.
Can we do a collectible series?
Yes — multiple designs print in one run at combined-quantity pricing. Series of four to six designs are a taproom favorite because guests collect the set.
How are they packed?
Shrink-wrapped sleeves of 25–100 in cartons — easy to stage behind the bar and hand to staff. Retail header-card packs are available for merch shelves.
Will condensation smear the printing?
No — inks are soak-set into the board, so rings darken the pulp without lifting the art. Coasters look used, not ruined, which is exactly the bar aesthetic.
How fast is turnaround?
Proofs land within a couple of days; standard runs print and ship in about 2 weeks, die-cut customs closer to 3. Event dates are worth flagging — we schedule to them.
How do I get a quote?
Send your artwork, shape, thickness and quantity through the quote form — you’ll get a proof and itemized pricing back quickly, with a series option if you want variety.
