Everything you need to know about custom beer coasters

Custom beer coasters are absorbent pulpboard coasters printed with your brewery’s branding — logo, beer names, tap list, event artwork, or a QR code that opens your menu. They do the humble job of catching condensation and drips, but they also occupy the single best piece of marketing real estate in the building: the four inches directly under a customer’s glass, in their eyeline for the whole visit.

Choosing well comes down to the pulpboard weight (how absorbent and reusable the coaster is), the size and shape, and what you print on each side. This guide walks through the common pulpboard weights and how they behave across a night of service, the sizes and shapes available, tap-list and QR printing, and how case pricing works from a single taproom order up to festival scale. Why go custom

The cheapest ad your brewery will ever run sits under the glass

A plain white coaster protects the bar. A custom beer coaster does that and works the room — every pour puts your logo, your newest release, or a scannable tap list directly in front of a customer who is already drinking your beer and deciding what to order next.

Eyeline marketing

The coaster is read every time the glass lifts. Print the flagship on one side and the seasonal release on the other and let the bar top sell it.

Scannable tap list

A QR code on the coaster opens your current tap list, loyalty signup or event calendar — the menu updates without reprinting a thing.

Built for beer service

High-absorbency pulpboard soaks up condensation and head overflow, keeps glasses from sticking, and survives more rounds than thin stock.

Pulpboard weights

Beer coaster weights: how thick should you go?

Pulpboard is measured in points (thousandths of an inch). Thicker board holds more liquid and survives more rounds before it curls — which is why taprooms and festivals usually spec differently. Here’s how the common weights compare.

Typical rounds of service before a coaster curls or saturates — generic ranges; humid patios and sweaty glassware shorten every board’s life.

Materials & absorbency

Pulpboard that earns its place under the glass

Beer coasters are cut from high-absorbency wood-pulp board — the same class of material the classic European beer mat is made from. It wicks condensation off the glass instead of letting it pool, keeps pints from sticking to the bar, and takes crisp full-color printing on both sides without the ink sealing the surface.

Because pulpboard is uncoated paper fiber, it’s also one of the most sustainable pieces of bar kit you can order: recyclable, compostable in most programs, and typically produced with a high recycled-fiber content. When a coaster has soaked up its last round, it goes in the bin without guilt — and there’s a fresh one printed with your next release waiting in the case.

  • High-absorbency pulpboard — wicks condensation, no pooling
  • Full-color printing, both sides — art on top, tap list or QR underneath
  • Uncoated surface — glasses don’t stick or slide
  • Recyclable & compostable — plain wood-pulp fiber, no laminate
  • Die-cut edges — clean rounds, squares and custom shapes
  • Case-packed — boxed for storage behind the bar
Customization options

Put the whole taproom on a coaster

Two-sided printing

Brand side up, working side down — logo on the face, tap list, QR code or event promo on the reverse.

Tap-list & QR printing

Print a QR code that opens your live tap list, online store or loyalty signup, so the coaster never goes out of date.

Shapes & die cuts

Classic 4" rounds and squares, plus custom die-cut shapes — a hop cone, a can silhouette, your logo’s outline.

Pulpboard weight

40pt event stock to 120pt heavyweight — matched to how long each coaster needs to survive.

Series & split runs

Run four beer designs across one order so every table gets a mixed set — collectors do the rest.

Event editions

Release-night, anniversary and festival editions with dates and one-off artwork, priced by the case.

Color guide

Coaster palettes that read across a dark bar

A coaster is read at arm’s length in taproom light, often under a wet glass. High contrast wins. Common directions our brewery customers take:

Amber orangeReads like a pour — the beer classic
Stout blackPremium look, makes logos pop
Natural kraftUnbleached pulp, craft-brewery feel
Pilsner goldBright, festival-friendly
Hop greenIPA lines and fresh-hop releases
Barrel redAmbers, reds and holiday runs
Midnight navyClean backdrop for white type

We print full color to your label artwork and can match Pantone brand colors — send the can art and the coaster will sit next to it seamlessly.

Bulk pricing

How custom beer coaster pricing works

Coasters are priced per piece, and the unit price falls fast with volume because setup is shared across the run. Your quote depends on four things: pulpboard weight, size and shape, one- or two-sided printing, and total quantity. Standard rounds and squares in volume are the best value in the building.

FAQ

Custom beer coaster questions, answered

What’s the minimum order for custom beer coasters?
Custom Bar Coasters has a minimum order of just 12 coasters. Per-piece pricing improves quickly as quantity grows, so request a quote with your target quantity for exact numbers.
What pulpboard weight should a taproom use?
80pt is the workhorse: thick enough to survive several rounds of condensation, substantial in the hand, and it prints beautifully. Festivals and one-night events usually drop to 40–60pt; heavyweight 120pt suits flagship branding and retail sets.
How absorbent are pulpboard coasters, really?
Pulpboard is uncoated wood-pulp fiber, so it wicks condensation off the glass rather than letting it pool. Thicker board holds more before saturating — a 40pt coaster is typically done after a round, while 80pt keeps working for several.
Can you print on both sides?
Yes — two-sided printing is the standard order. Most breweries run branding on the face and a working reverse: tap list, QR code, event promo or the story behind the beer.
Can I put a QR code on the coaster?
Yes, and it’s the smartest square inch on the board. Point it at your live tap list, online shop, loyalty signup or event calendar — you update the destination anytime, so the coaster never goes stale. We test-scan the code on the proof.
What sizes and shapes are available?
The classic 4" round and 4" square are standard and price best; 3.5" versions run slightly smaller tables. Custom die-cut shapes — hop cones, can silhouettes, your logo outline — are available on most weights.
Can I split one order across multiple beer designs?
Yes — split runs let you print a series (four beers, four designs) inside one order at the combined quantity’s price. Mixed sets on the table turn coasters into collectibles.
Are the coasters recyclable?
Yes. Pulpboard is plain wood-pulp fiber with no plastic laminate, so spent coasters are recyclable and accepted as compostable in most programs — a genuinely low-waste piece of bar kit.
What artwork format do you need?
Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) print cleanest, but high-resolution label or can art works well too. Send what you have and we’ll flag anything that needs sharpening before proofing.
Can you match our brand colors?
Yes — we print full color and can match specified Pantone (PMS) colors, so the coaster sits next to your cans and tap handles without a mismatch.
What’s the turnaround time?
Standard production is about 2 weeks after you approve your proof, with express shipping available for fixed dates. Planning around an event or launch? Put the date in your quote request and we’ll confirm timing up front.
Do you ship to festivals or multiple venues?
Yes — orders ship nationwide and can be split across destinations, so the festival cases go to the fairgrounds while the taproom stock goes to the bar. Note split shipping in your quote request.
Do you offer samples before a full run?
For larger orders we can arrange a pre-production proof or sample so you can check color and board weight in hand before the full quantity prints. Ask when you request your quote.
How do I get a quote?
Use the custom quote form with your size, weight, quantity and artwork, and we’ll send back pricing and a production timeline.
